Warez Abbreviations/File Extensions
——————————————————————————–
“Warez” refers primarily to copyrighted works traded in violation of copyright law. The term generally refers to illegal releases by organized groups, as opposed to peer-to-peer file sharing between friends or large groups of people with similar interest using a darknet. It usually does not refer to commercial for-profit software counterfeiting. This term was initially coined by members of the various computer underground circles, but has since become commonplace among Internet users and the mass media.
A RAR file
RAR is the native format of WinRAR archiver. Like other archives, RAR files are data containers, they store one or several files in the compressed form. After you downloaded RAR file from Internet, you need to unpack its contents in order to use it.
How to handle RAR files
WinRAR provides the complete support for RAR files, so you may both create and unpack them. If you installed WinRAR on your computer and downloaded RAR file from Internet, you may double click on RAR file icon to open it in WinRAR, select all files, press “Extract To†button, enter a destination path and press “OKâ€Â. Another way is to click on the RAR file in Explorer using the right mouse button. If you enabled “Shell integration†option when installing WinRAR, the file context menu will contain “Extract to …†item.
Some RAR files can be parts of multi-volume sequences. In WinRAR you can split a huge archive to a few smaller files, which are called volumes. They may have extensions .rar (the first volume), .r00, .r01, …, or .part1.rar (the first volume), .part2.rar, …, etc. If you need to unpack volumes, place all them to the same folder and start extraction from the first volume.
A ZIP file
A file format that compresses data to a small fraction of its original size in bytes. This makes transfer across a network or the Internet much faster. A single ZIP file can contain many individual files that will be reconsituted after the data is uncompressed. The ZIP format is used by many file compression programs. In order to use a file that has been compressed into a ZIP file, you must have a compression/uncompression software program ie WINZIP OR WINRAR.
What is a FTP
An FTP site is like a large filing cabinet. With a traditional filing cabinet, the person who does the filing has the option to label and organize the files how ever they see fit. They also decide which files to keep locked and which remain public. It is the same with an FTP site.
The virtual ‘key’ to get into an FTP site is the UserID and Password. If the creator of the FTP site is willing to give everyone access to the files, the UserID is ‘anonymous’ and the Password is your e-mail address (e.g.
name@domain.com
). If the FTP site is not public, there will be a unique UserID and Password for each person who is granted access.
When connecting to an FTP site that allows anonymous logins, you’re frequently not prompted for a name and password. Hence, when downloading from the Internet, you most likely are using an anonymous FTP login and you don’t even know it.
To make an FTP connection you can use a standard Web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) or a dedicated FTP software program(flashFXP), referred to as an FTP ‘Client’.
iSO
.ISO is also a CD image format, but is sometimes used for ‘ISO9660 format’ (standard, recognized by all applications) and sometimes for unique Easy CD ISO format. Use Daemon Tools to mount the files.
.r01, r02, r03 etc. files
If you find a directory with a bunch of files ending in .Rnn, it’s a RAR archive split into multiple parts. This is commonly done for posting to Usenet newsgroups. Open the .RAR file and extract the contents with WinRAR (Windows) or UnRarX (OS X.) Either program should automatically see all the parts if they are in the same directory.
rar .zip .ace .r01 .001
These extensions are quite common and mean that your file(s) are compressed into an “archiveâ€Â.
This is just a way of making the files more compact and easier to download.
To open any of those archives listed above you can use WinRAR (Make sure you have the latest version) or PowerArchiver.
If those progams aren’t working for you and you have a .zip file you can try WinZip (Trial version).
If the two first mentioned programs aren’t working for you and you have a .ace or .001 file you can try Winace (Trial version).
.cbr .cbz
These are usually comic books in an archive format. a .cbr file is actually the same thing as a .rar file and a .cbz file is the same as a .zip file. However, often when opening them with WinRAR or WinZip it will disorder your pages. To display these archives properly it’s often best to use CDisplay.
.avi .mpg. .mpeg .divx .xvid .wmv
These files are usually movies or TVshows, or a host of other types of media. They can be viewed using various media players, but I suggest using Zoomplayer, BSPlayer, VLC media player or Windows Media Player. Also, you’ll need to make sure you have the right codecs to play each individual file. Search google for “ace mega codec pack†then download and install that.
.mov
These are QuickTime files. Hopefully you won’t have to open these as I hate quicktime.
.ra .rm .ram
These are RealPlayer files. RealPlayer IMO is the devils work. It installs lord knows what on your system and never really goes away when you want to uninstall it. Still if you insists you can get the player from real.com
vcd/svcd
These can be a pain on some peoples setups, but more so, on your stand-alone DVD player. For all your vcd needs check out

. These guys know their stuff, and can help you with all kinds of media related questions.
.mp3 .mp2
Usually music files. Play them with WinAmp.
.ogm .ogg
Ogg Vorbis media files. You can find out more about them and download applications here. This filetype is another music file format, but can be used for various media. You will probably want to download the DirectShow Ogg filter to play back OGM files. Any new version of WinAmp will also do.
.bin and .cue
These are your standard images of a CD, and are used quite alot these days. To open them you have a couple options. You can burn them using Nero (Trial Version) or Alcohol 120%, but this proves to be soooooooo problematic for a lot of people. You should also consult this tutorial for burning images with various software programs You can also use Daemon Tools, which lets you mount the image to a “virtual cd-româ€Â, so basically it tricks your computer into thinking that you have another cd-rom and that you’re putting a cd with your image file on it into this virtual cd-rom, it’s great cuz you’ll never make a bad cd again, Alcohol 120% also sports a virtual cd-rom feature. Finally, if you’re still struggling to access the files contained within any given image file you can use CDMage to extract the files and then burn them, or just access them from your hard drive. You can also use VCDGear to extract the mpeg contents of a SVCD or VCD image file such as bin/cue.
.iso
Another type of image file that follows similar rules as .bin and .cue, only you extract or create them using WinISO or ISOBuster. Sometimes converting a problematic .bin and .cue file to an .iso can help you burn it to a cd.
.ccd .img .sub
All these files go together and are in the CloneCD format. CloneCD is like most other CD-Burning programs, see the .bin and .cue section if you’re having problems with these files.
